The First Tamil Cinema

Do you know the first Tamil cinema? You may have heard about but not sure. Am I correct? Know it. That is “Kalidas”, produced on 31st October 1931. The hero was P.G. Venkatesan and the heroine, T.P. Rajalakshmi. The story is nothing but how an illiterate shepherd poet is finally blessed with the goddess Kali with knowledge and stuff being answered by his wife’s prayer who is actually a princess. The film was really a big hit. You know, there are two amazing things about Kalidas – 1. There were about 50 songs in that film ( imagine how our people today would react in the theatre!). 2. The characters spoke not only Tamil but also Telugu and Hindi. What do you think about this film?
